Do you know the Saidi and Baladi dance?
Saidi Dance
Saidi is a traditional Egyptian dance originating from the region of Upper Egypt known as Sa'id. This dance is characterized by its energetic and dynamic movements and is often associated with the use of a stick or stick, referring to its roots in martial dances and folk traditions. Saidi dance is traditionally danced to a specific musical style called "saidi", which has a distinct rhythm and uses traditional instruments such as mizmar and tabla.
Saidi dance is often cheerful and playful, with an emphasis on rhythmic movements of the hips and legs. Dancers perform a variety of jumps, spins and stick movements that embody strength and agility. This dance is popular at weddings and festivals where it serves as a celebration of the cultural identity and traditions of the Sa'id region.
Ballad Dance
Baladi, meaning "my home" or "my countryside", is another traditional Egyptian dance style known for its naturalness and spontaneity. Baladi dance is based on folklore and represents a more earthy and agricultural style than Raqs Sharqi, which is considered more formal and stagey.
Baladi dance is characterized by gentle, flowing movements of the hips, chest and abdomen that express a connection to the land and local traditions. Dancers often wear a traditional garment called a "baladi dress", which is comfortable and allows for free movement. The dance is often accompanied by music with a distinctive rhythm that emphasizes unique movements and improvisation.
Baladi dance is a celebration of femininity, strength and cultural identity. It is popular at family celebrations and social events, where it serves as a means of connecting with the community and expressing the joy of life.
Both of these styles, Saidi and Baladi, offer a unique insight into Egypt's rich dance tradition, bringing joy and cultural heritage into the lives of dancers and spectators alike.
Traditionally, specific costumes are worn for Baladi and Saidi dances, which are not only aesthetic, but also practical and suitable for the movements of these dance styles.
Baladi Costume
1. Baladi Dress: Baladi dancers often wear a special dress called "baladi dress". These dresses are usually long and loose, allowing for easy movement. They are made of light and comfortable materials, often with sequins or beads that add shine and elegance.
2. Shawl or Scarf: A dancer can wear a scarf around the hips to emphasize the movements of the abdomen and hips. This shawl is often decorated with beads or coins that make a sound when moving.
3. Accessories: Dancers can wear a variety of jewelry such as earrings, bracelets, and necklaces to add an extra layer of elegance to the costume.
Saidi Costume
1. Galabeya: For the Saidi dance, the traditional garment is a long, straight tunic called a "galabeya". This tunic is often decorated and can be in different colors. Saidi costumes are typically less formal than those for Raqs Sharqi.
2. Wand or Pole: An important element of Saidi dance is the wand or pole which is used for various movements and tricks during the dance. The wand can be simply decorated or have more complex ornaments.
3. Headgear: Sometimes the costume may include a headgear or scarf, which is another traditional element of clothing for Saidi dance.
Both of these costume styles not only contribute to the aesthetic impression of the dance, but also respect the cultural traditions and needs of individual dance styles. In our offer in the e-shop you will find many accessories that could be useful for this dance.
